Kristin Böttcher from Finnish Environmental Institute defended her thesis on the phenological cycle of vegetation. In her thesis, she developed methods for determination of the timing of recovery and cessation of photosynthesis in evergreen boreal forest based on satellite observations of snow cover, soil freeze and vegetation indices. As a result, she also derived national-scale maps for the start and end of vegetation active period covering a period of 17 and 6 years, respectively. The maps for the start of the vegetation active period are also published as a web services.
